The following data is taken from PC-NEWS sales ranking data for 2006. Some fan in Japan actually compiled the promotional movies for each of the games into a single movie, watchable online (note: the movies are flv files, but current gaming.wikia extension cannot embed it yet like youtube movies).

I recommend you to watch the movie in a new window while reading the rest of this post (the movie does not have explicit nudity, though some parts may be considered PG-17)

A couple of things to keep in mind:

  1. The tally is only for sales between January 1st 2006 to December 31 2006. Thus games released late in the year had a disadvantage. Games released in mid/late December have a significant handicap. Also, games released before 2006 start counting from 0 also.
  2. The promotional trailer often does not reflect the quality of the game whatsoever, except to show off the character designs. This is especially true of trailers that are ADV games and do not show any gameplay.
  3. Many games sold well (or got a significant boost) simply by the virtue of their trailer/music, or by being the sequel of another successful game.
  4. I did not make this video. I merely found it online and share it with you.

1 Some games have a "first edition" which packs extra goodies in them, and PC-NEWS tallies them separately, affecting some games' ranking. The creator of this video used PC-NEWS' ranking order, but added the sale numbers of the various editions together.
2 All dates are in Asian YYYY/MM/DD order for intuitive sorting.
3 Prices listed in the table are for normal editions, before tax, in Japanese yen.

[edit] Noteworthy stuff

  • Alice Soft was the grand winning developer, with all three of its 2006 games making it into the top 20, and a combined 121,271 sales.
  • Giga also had two games in the top 20.
  • Two different fandiscs made their way into top 20.
  • Four of the top 10 titles (2 games and the two fandiscs) were released in the middle or latter half of December, which means the sales figures were within the first two weeks of them hitting the shelves.
  • Fate/stay night, an early 2004 title, remained on the top 20 for 2006. Remember, this is not cumulative sales.

[edit] Disappointments

  • I was surprised that Man At Work! 4 by Studio e.go! didn't make it into the top 20.
  • May Illusion fans will probably be disappointed by the fact that Sexy Beach 3 didn't make it to the top 30. Though honestly speaking, while Illusion games tend to have a (relatively) huge following outside Japan, its 3D games are their own niche within the niche market of Japanese eroge.
