Remember how fun it was to enter in your friend's 12-digit friend codes for each and every single game they played on their DS? Whoa, you don't either? Oh, that's right... now I remember. The friend code system introduced with the Nintendo DS and continuing with the Nintendo Wii is the least intuitive way of getting online I can imagine short of requiring three forms of government-issued ID and your grandmother's verification that you are indeed who you say you are.

Nintendo has delivered some extremely disheartening news. For any particular game you wish to take online with your Wii - the upcoming Metroid Prime 3: Corruption for instance - you'll have to enter a friend code for anyone you'd like to play with. Let's say I've got my cousin over in Maryland and there are three different Wii games I'd like to play online with him; this equates to me having to enter three different 12-digit friend codes, one for each game. Many early adopters of the Wii were hoping at the very least Nintendo would resort to assigning one friend code per system, which would make game play with the same people at least somewhat plausible.

What's the deal? Is Nintendo still worried about potential child predators sneaking over to your house to get you if you have a normal user name and password, much like the advanced Xbox Live and the Playstation Network? I know Nintendo has been really slow to realize that online truly is what gamers want, but why must they make us utilize the most sourest of processes in order to play with my friends?

Oh well, I suppose I'll just have to wait to play with my friend 1293 2395 3929 in Metroid Prime 3 later...

[Edit: it has come to my attention that the following information is as yet unconfirmed. It's another one of those "my friend talked to someone from GameSpy"-rumors, but I have a strong feeling this will stick. If you all would be so kind as to update the article as information changes. -cam503]

[Edit: The Wii also has a 16 digit code, which may be used instead. This is just speculation, but it is not unlikely. As for the gamespy rumour: link -Einaman-]
