Editorial:Consoles not made the way they used to

I think ever since the ps1 and the advent of the cd i have not owned a console that has lasted more then a few years without going faulty, this includes ps1 ps2 dreamcast, i never owned an xbox. i sense the trend getting bigger, what with all 3 of the new systems have faults straight out of the box.
The sad thing is if i go into my cupboard and pull out my megadrive or SNES all the cartridges need is 1 puff of air and they work as good as the day i brought them. i bet many of you have the old original gameboy stashed somewhere, and that still works perfectly
is it that console makers do not believe people will want to play the consoles for more then a few years? or do they want to skimp of quality to keep prices low? or do you think they do this deliberately so that we have to get a replacement/ upgrade?
