Wow! my first review....

Anyway, Wii Play, released in Dec 2006 to everywhere san North America, and Feburary 12 2007 in North America, is yet another game in the "Wii" series developed by Nintendo. the first in the series, Wii Sports, set the tone of the Wii series, in which players utliize mainly the motion controls, to engage in fun and simple games.

In the case of Wii Play, it have the following games. I will also include the reviews of each game:

  • Shooting - The first game played, Shooting is basically a modern update of Duck Hunt, using the IR to shoot numerous target, from ballons to target to clay piegon and even UFO. Ducks will occasionally fly by, giving you bonus points. This game is acceptible, especially if you want to shoot somethign and haven't got a FPS or can't wait for Godfather. Another plus side is that it is one of the few games that have one-console multiplayer shooting. No matter how the players do, they will all go through 5 levels, with a set play time.
  • Table Tennis - Think of it as pong on a vertical field; player moves their respective paddles left and right by aiming their wiimote toward the screen and move it left and right. Unfortunately, this game will get boring very soon, even for multiplayer.
  • Find Mii - You will be presented with crowds of wii, and you will have to find a certain single or set of Miis. Despite the fact that it will get bored quite quickly, with the fact that you are not in a hurry, you have time to talk with your playmate.
  • Pose Mii - A player must pose his Mii to falling bubbles using the Wii remote pointer, and switching poses back and forth using A and B button. Again, you will aim the wiimote at the screen, but this time you will also have to rotate the wiimote. Like Table Tennis, you will get bored with this quickly, even with multiplayer,
  • Laser Hockey - Think of original pong, except you can move the paddle in your halves, and rotate them to change the puck's flying direction. This game, unlike Table tennis, have a time limit, and thus is actually quite fun to play due to this.... in multiplayer mode, of course.
  • Billiards - If you do not have your own 9-ball billiards, Wii Play's Billiards is a good subsitute. Player will line up their shots roughly using the d-pad of their wiimote, and fine tune it by aiming at the cueball, using the IR aimer. Slightly to the side will provide a spin, while at the center provide speed. After locking on their aim spot with the B button, player can pull back their wiimote, and depend on how hard they lunge the cue stick forward, either does a dudge, or a speed ball that trigger a chain reaction. One of the best game in Wii play, while this will not improve your billiard skills, it certainly provide you of that feeling, and it's definitely fun to play with a friend.
  • Fishing - Aiming the wiimote at the screen, the wiimote now represent a fishing rod. This time, you will have to move it up, down, left, right, and forward and back. You may hook any fish you want, but to earn more points players must get the bonus fish shown on screen at the moment. With time limit it's not an entire bore, but certainly best when playing with another person. However, if I am playing with another person, I may want to use a first to points system instead.
  • This time, you will hold the wiimote on its side to ride a charging cow along a set path, and you move the cow by tilting the wiimote; frot to accelerate, back to brake, and side to side to turning, and a sudden pull up for jump. While in both single player and muliplayer, the main objective is to knock down as much scarecrows as possible, in essence it is a racing game, so if you do not have a racing game for Wii (especially in light of poor reviews for Wii racers), it's acceptible during multiplayer.
  • Tanks! Basically on a 2D map, player controlls the tank along the map, and try to eliminate enemy by either shooting them or laying mines. While you can just aim the wii mote and use the d-pad to drive the tank, it's definitely better to use the nunchuk to control the tank. In multiplayer, both of them are in co-op mode (to get through the levels) with competition (to get most points). I would say this is the worst minigames, especially if the other player does not have nunchuk.

All in all, these games is okay if you have people who just do not know how to play games (like my mother), or just want to have some quick fun (eg: LAN party intermissions) I will have to say this: Wii Play is definitely too simple for people who can even play moderately. For truly causal people, such as your parents, it is a good subsitute for ye old board games during family nights.

Even with all these positive comments, just this game alone would not worth more than $10. However, what make Wii Play an acceptible choice is that it comes with a Wiimote. Using USD price, it's basically a wiimote with $10 dollars more for the game, and for someone like me who thinks virtual console is a waste of money (PERSONAL OPINION! PERSONAL OPINION!), then Wii Play is a very good deal.

So here's the deal: If you have less than 4 wiimotes, and do not really care about Virtual console, get WiiPlay. It's not really that bad, and help improve your gaming library. if you prefer virtual console games, or have 4 wiimotes, then just skip it, because without the wiimote, then it's worthless.... and you may consider getting a VC game + a wiimote a better deal.

Non-gamer: 10/10 Causal: 8.5/10 Hardcore gamer: 5/10 only due to the wiimote, else 3/10

One liner: A wiimote that comes with a acceptible game demo and cause $10 more.
