Editorial:A Review of PaRappa the Rapper

“PaRappa the Rapper” is an oddball music rhythm game from Japan, like “Elite Beat Agents.” First released in 1997 for the original PlayStation, “PaRappa” stars a positive-thinking dog who conquers life’s obstacles through rap contests.
Cheesy setup, yeah, but it’s charming and fun, and bolstered by an engaging art style with flat, floppy characters and a sunny tone. The game play is simple, though not easy. In each of six stages, players must pay attention to cues in the lyrics and match button presses in time with the beat and what’s on the screen. It’s sort of like a game of Simon.
It’s curious that this game was repackaged and released for $30 when several original PlayStation games are available for download through the PlayStation Store for $5 or so. This version game is in widescreen, and there are downloadable songs and an ad hoc multiplayer mode, but the price seems steep for a 10-year-old game.
